A Guide to a Small, Relaxing Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is usually a time where families get together, fill themselves with delicious carbs and watch a football game that eventually lulls everyone to sleep. However, gatherings might look much smaller this year as the pandemic continues to rage on into the holiday season. A smaller Thanksgiving dinner can add a relaxed and intimate quality to your food that is just as charming as the bursting table. If you’re opting for a smaller Thanksgiving with just immediate family, we’ve put together some simple tips to get you through the day.
Set a pretty table spread
Get creative and display some seasonal decorations to accent your meal. Having to prepare dinner for fewer people allows you to invest more energy into the details rather than the meal itself. Find a festive table cloth and set out your nice china and cutlery. Adding a few decorative pumpkins or a bouquet of autumnal flowers to the table makes a lovely, eye-catching centerpiece. Try out cloth napkins and learn some new folds! With such a small, intimate gathering, these little detail can go a long way.
Prepare a smaller bird
One of the perks of celebrating a small Thanksgiving is that you don’t have to spend the entire day cooking a 20lb turkey. Leave that 20-pounder at the grocery store and find one half that size. Consider picking up a turkey breast that you can pop into the crockpot and have ready in a few hours. The time you save cooking a small bird frees up more time for you to relax and spend with family!
Limit side dishes and dessert
Plan fewer side dishes and chose only a select amount of family favorites to prepare ahead of time. Potatoes, stuffing and green beans make the perfect trio to compliment your turkey. Dessert can be just as simple with limiting options.
Create new family traditions
Take some time out of the day to do an activity with your family. Go on a walk around the neighborhood, participate in your local Turkey Trot, do a Thanksgiving craft, watch a holiday movie, start decorating for Christmas, go for a drive, whip out some board games, do something. Make sure to take break from all the cooking, cleaning and planning to spend some good, quality time with your loved ones.
Skip the cooking and do Thanksgiving pickup instead
Better yet, skip all the planning, grocery shopping and let someone else do it for you! Lots of local restaurants and businesses are offering Thanksgiving pickups this year. 2020 has been hard enough, you deserve to sit this one out and enjoy a relaxing day with your favorite people.
